In einer Rundmail von Emergent Village stand heute folgend Aussage von Barack Obama über das Gebet. Nachdem sich für deutsche Politiker ganz im Sinne von Kant Glaube auf Werte beschränkt, redet hier einer – sympathisch, wie ich finde – von seiner Glaubenspraxis:
As I travel across the country folks often ask me what is it that I pray for. And like most of you, my prayers sometimes are general: Lord, give me the strength to meet the challenges of my office. Sometimes they’re specific: Lord, give me patience as I watch Malia go to her first dance where there will be boys. Lord, have that skirt get longer as she travels to that dance.
But while I petition God for a whole range of things, there are a few common themes that do recur. The first category of prayer comes out of the urgency of the Old Testament prophets and the Gospel itself. I pray for my ability to help those who are struggling. Christian tradition teaches that one day the world will be turned right side up and everything will return as it should be. But until that day, we’re called to work on behalf of a God that chose justice and mercy and compassion to the most vulnerable.

so falsch, wie viele christliche Amerikaner uns den Obama darstellen wollen, kann er wohl nicht sein. Ich hoffe, dass seine Gebete erhört werden und er die gleiche Beurteilung wie Josia (Jeremia 22:15-16) bekommt.
Ich frage mich nur, wie dann die Senatsbeschlüsse(?), vor denen Jim Wallis gerade warnt, auf den Hintergrund dieses Gebets durchgewunken werden können.
Die Passage stammt aus einer Rede anlässlich eines Gebetsfrühstücks in Washington. Eine sehr sympathische aber auch wohl sehr „zielgruppengerechte“ Äusserung…
Interessant. Auch wenn Obama (vermutlich verständlicherweise) nicht unbedingt die Erwartungen erfüllen kann, die viele an ihn hatten – seine christlichen Überzeugungen nehme ich ihm ab. Sicher ist so etwas auch zielgerichtet, aber es klingt mir theologisch doch schon sehr anders, als was z.B. ein George W. Bush von sich gegeben hat.
